Can you help us come up with a book title?

I’m just finishing a manuscript for IVP. But we’re having problems coming up with a title. It’s little hard to categorise. It’s about discipleship, soteriology and eschatology. Essentially it’s about how the cross and resurrection should shape our lives. It covers living in the light of grace, following the way of the cross (the way of sacrificial love, self-denial and service), accepting the pattern of suffering followed by glory, recognising that resurrection power and freedom are power to be weak and freedom to serve, and living for eternity.

Everyone is fairly happy with the subtitle ‘Living the Cross and Resurrection’ though it does depend on the title. Here are some of the options (in no particular order):

The Forever Principle: Living the Cross and Resurrection

United to Christ: Living the Cross and Resurrection

Life in Christ: Living the Cross and Resurrection

Living the Cross and Resurrection (with no subtitle)

Significant: Living the Cross and Resurrection

Nailed: Living the Cross and Resurrection

Total Discipleship: Living the Cross and Resurrection

The Way: Living the Cross and Resurrection

For De ath and Glory: Living the Cross and Resurrection

The Jerusalem Road: Living the Cross and Resurrection

Living the Cross and Resurrection: Aligning Your Life with the Story of Jesus

The Jesus-Shaped Life: Living the Cross and Resurrection

The Adventure of Hope: Living the Cross and Resurrection

Radical: Living the Cross and Resurrection

Dissident People: Living the Cross and Resurrection

The Paradox Principle: Living the Cross and Resurrection

Let me know what you think. One issue to remember: IVP are keen for a title that works around the world. Anything too cryptic or anglo-centric won’t do the job. (I quite liked ‘Altar Ego’ but it was too clever by half!)

Or please suggest other titles. If you come up with a title then gets used then I’ll send you a free copy.

  1. I think you want to be careful of titles that it’s hard to use when referring to the book in conversation. e.g. “the way” which, though i like it, would end up with people calling it “tim chester’s cross book” (in my opinion!). I think possibly nailed, significant, and radical also come under this, though I may be wrong about the whole thing, or maybe you wouldn’t mind!
I think the phrase “aligning your life” is a little new age sounding, but then maybe it would broaden your audience!
SUCH a shame CJ mahaney already took the obvious one…
I like “total discipleship”, and “for death and glory” by far the most. And depending on content, “The adventure of hope”.
    :-)

  2. How about:
Suffering then Glory: Living the Cross and Resurrection, or
Suffering, Freedom and Power: Living the Cross and Resurrection.
If you don’t like these my vote would be for:
Living the Cross and Resurrection (no subtitle).
Whatever title you choose, may God use it to help people live the cross and resurrection for His glory.
    In Christ’s grace
    Kevin

  3. How about:

In His Footsteps: Living the Cross and Resurrection
Follow the Leader: Living the Cross and Resurrection

If neither of those, I like ‘Total Discipleship’, and ‘Living the Cross and Resurrection’ most.

  4. Here’s a few options, fleshing out the idea of paradox, which I think has a lot of potential!

The Paradox of Discipleship: Living the Cross and Resurrection
Practicing Paradox: Living the Cross and Resurrection
Practicing Paradox: The Cross and Resurrection Life
The Way of Paradox: Living the Cross and Resurrection

or on another train of thought:
Dying to Live: Practicing the Cross and Resurrection
Life through Death: Practicing the Cross and Resurrection

I’m looking forward to reading the book!

  5. I like Foster’s one, “Life on the Other Side: Living the Cross and Resurrection”

“Total Discipleship: Living the Cross and Resurrection” is an obvious and good choice.

And I do love “De ath and Glory: Living the Cross and Resurrection” (I wouldn’t bother with the “For”)

Or how’s about “Safe to the End: Living the Cross and Resurrection”

Or, “You Can Live: Living the Cross and Resurrection”

  6. Total Discipleship sounds about the best. I am enjoying Total Church at the moment, and immediately thought of Total Discipleship as a strong possibility before I saw your suggestions. How about –
Following Fully: Living the Cross and Resurrection.
    Is that too funky??

  7. I think “Total Discipleship” is the winner. It could be the second in a line of “Total” books, obviously beginning with “Total Church.” It is the catchiest to me…

  8. All look good! I guess the “Total” theme works well. If you continue the theme into other projects you may become known as “Total Tim”!
One other thought, “A Life turned Inside Out”

  9. total discipleship : living between the cross and the new creation

    or

worshipping and waiting: living between the cross and the new creation

    or

walkling and waiting : living between the cross and the new creation

  10. Hi from the Netherlands:
1: Total Disciplelship: Living the the Cross and Resurrection the best!
    2. Radical: Living the the Cross and Resurection
or: Total Disciplelship: Living radical the the Cross and Resurrection :-)

  11. From Andy Stovell …
    Cross over to glory
    Crossing to Glory
    Hidden Lives
    Lives Hidden with God
    It will all become clear
    The Normal Christian Life
    Radical is not the word
Death & Glory (dropping the “for”)
    Do we really need reminding?

  12. Tim

    How about

Life, today, tomorrow and forever: Living the Cross and Resurrection

The Great Escape: Living the Cross and Resurrection

or to catch a broader market:

Razzle: Living the Cross and Resurrection

  13. I’m just enjoying the fact that I’ve noticed the product placement in your profile picture. I’ve suddenly got an urge to buy cheesy biscuits.

Apart from that, there’s no way on earth you can call it “nailed” – a book never to show to a friend who’s not a Christian!

    But Total Discipleship sounds awesome.

When’s your next book after that due out, Tim? Next week?!

  14. My 2p-worth… I think _Total Discipleship_ would be great, providing the connection that would inevitably be made with _Total Church_ wouldn’t be misleading. _Life in Christ_ is also good, capturing something of Paul’s ‘in Christ’ (and the importance of his death and resurrection for that phrase). Or just keep it as _Living the Cross and Resurrection_.

  15. I’d think twice about using Total Discipleship. That title would led me to think that I was buying a book covering discipleship in whole not unlike you cover all the major aspects of church in Total Church. Are you covering all major aspects of discipleship in this new book?

  16. how about

Life In Between – living the cross and resurrection

Thanks tim for writing. It crosses culture even to Perth!

  17. Is the space in de ath on purpose? Is the suggested title ‘for de, ath, and glory’? cos I think that’s got a good ring to it!

I quite like ‘the forever principle’ and ‘for death and glory’, keeping the ‘for’: I think the that makes it sound more like there’s a future purpose involving death and glory, rather than just implying a link between death and glory.

Also, as someone currently living in Japan (albeit less than a month in) I think a lot of the less straight-forward titles would need a bit of explaining to Eastern folk, even one’s with good English.

  18. How about ‘Cross culture : living the cross and resurrection’ to emphasise that every area of our lives and thinking is addressed in a cross shaped and counter cultural way.

  19. How about:

Total Christianity – Living the Cross and Resurrection
The resurrected Christian – Living the Cross and Resurrection

or sticking with a word from your last book:

Resurrected Church – Living the Cross and Resurrection

  20. BTW – note all these silent readers who come out of the woodwork when there is a sniff of a freebie, no matter how much of a long shot it is.

  21. How about…

“Why I say one Peter instead of first Peter”

    by Tim Chester

It has anything to do with the content, but those of us across the pond would buy it just out of sheer curiosity.

  22. Pingback: A shortlist for the book title « TIM CHESTER :: reformed spirituality and missional church

  23. Votes from friends of Sarah …

The Jesus-Shaped Life: Living the Cross and Resurrection

Living the Cross and Resurrection: Aligning Your Life with the Story of Jesus

  24. Okay, let me take a stab:
    “Buried and Raised”
(or for those with more Tolkienien leanings)
    “There and Back Again”

  25. I agree that the title would do well to have “total” in it, and thus be able to immediately connect with the “Total Church” market. Plus, it gets to how generally one side or the other (cross and resurrection I mean) is left out. How about:
    Total Life
    Total Christianity
    Total Christian
    Total Grace
    Total Transformation
    Total Radical
    Total Disciple
    Total Living
    Total Death, Total Life

  26. I’d lean towards either “Your Best Discipleship Now” or “Becoming A Better Disciple” personally…
