The 4Gs – truths to set you free

In my book You Can Change I identified four liberating truths about God. I suggested that underlying  all our sinful behaviour and negative emotions is a failure to believe one of these truths at a functional level. Embracing, believing, trusting, delighting in the appropriate liberating truth therefore has the power to set us free from sin – though we need to recognize that this typically involves a daily struggle – the fight of faith. These four liberating truths offer a great diagnostic tool for addressing sin in our lives and in the lives of others. The four truths are:

1. God is great – so we don’t have to be in control

2. God is glorious – so we don’t have to fear others

3. God is good – so we don’t have to look elsewhere

4. God is gracious – so we don’t have to prove ourselves

Last year I visited Soma Communities with whom The Crowded House have a strong partnership. Readers of this blog will know Soma have been a strong influence on us.

Soma Communities have been using the four liberating truths a lot. They have coined the term ‘the 4 Gs’ as a short description for them. Caesar Kalinowski emailed me today saying, ‘We continue to be absolutely rocked by the 4 Gs … We now do them each time at Soma School due to the overwhelming response to the material.’ They have four free audio messages on each of the 4 Gs based on talks they gave in Estonia.

  1. Hi Tim,

    Very powerful indeed.

I wanted to download the sermons, but only three are available and sound quality is very mixed plus there are long gaps of silence.

I know I should buy your book but a. I am in South Africa and b. a terrible reader, so my question – is there anywhere else were one can download these sermons or concepts from?

Thanks so much and keep strong in Christ

  3. Tim,
The 4 G’s have become a great discipleship tool for me and my church family over the past year. My wife and I read through that chapter together at a sovereign-ly appointed time–a month or so before our miscarriage last fall. We found ourselves lingering in Psalm 145 and seeing our great and glorious and good and gracious God in every verse. They helped each of us preach God’s healing truth to each others souls. Thanks for ministering to us!

    See you in October!

  4. Tim,

We picked up the 4 G’s from you a year ago at the TC conference in San Diego. It has been unbelievably helpful for our community here in Arizona. Last week a girl prayed in our Missional Community and in her prayer she walked through the 4 G’s. I just sat there and thought, “Wow, they are getting it!”

    Thanks!

    Chris

  5. Thanks Tim for your quick reply. I will look into ordering via Amazon and have used the UK site in the past with success.
